DC Families for Safe Streets is committed to the principle that Black Lives Matter and the long fight to eradicate systematic racism and implicit bias on our streets. In 2019, half of DC’s fatal traffic violence victims died while traveling in historically Black neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River in Wards 7 and 8. This is despite the fact that residents of these Wards compromise 22% of the District’s population. To combat this inexcusable road safety inequity, DC-FSS will listen, partner, and fiercely pursue anti-racist policy solutions to end traffic violence without creating additional harm, especially to our Black and brown neighbors. All travelers, regardless of race, gender, sexuality, age, ability, and income level deserve respect and safety in our public spaces.
DC-FSS is a chapter of the national Families for Safe Streets organization and a sponsored project of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association. We work with leadership and staff from both organizations in carrying out our mission. We commit to actively listen and act in service to the needs of all District residents to ensure our work is anti-racist and uses the levers available to us to dismantle the white privilege and systematic racism that pervades our streets.
